Senior Bowl Recap

The Super Bowl betting line is heating up, but in the meantime the guys that will figure into future betting tips were hammering away in the Under Armour 2010 College Senior Bowl.

Easily the biggest disappointment at this year’s Senior Bowl was former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. Oh how the mighty have fallen, and Tebow has fallen hard. What was once a possible first round pick has dropped as far as the fifth round to some experts. Tebow has shown that while he has the makings of a great leader, he does not have the physical tools to be an NFL quarterback. He is not mobile, he does not make great decisions and his arm is suspect.

The Senior Bowl is never about who wins, it is about who shows up to play. One of the players who came to play was Cincinnati receiver Mardy Gilyard. Gilyard has racked up two consecutive 1000+ yard seasons in college, and he looks to be a good pro next season. He helped to solidify his standing as a top receiver prospect.

On defense Georgia stand-out Geno Atkins showed that he has the physical and mental tools to terrorize QBs at the NFL level. He picked up a sack in the game, and Tim Tebow was probably very happy to have Atkins on his side for once.

The Senior Bowl is a chance for players to show NFL scouts and coaches what they can do. Guys like free safety Taylor Mays who had an interception and linebacker Sean Witherspoon who also had a pick and broke up a pass probably did some good for their cause. They showed potential and gave scouts some good reason to move them up on their draft boards. Players like Tebow and Oklahoma State QB Zac Robinson who also fumbled twice probably wished they had stayed at home.

Expect Florida, Texas to Meet for BCS Title

After Texas Nebraska betting and the big Florida/Alabama game, we’ll know the BCS title game matchup and all the other bowl games. Don’t be surprised at all if we see Tim Tebow’s Florida Gators battle Colt McCoy’s Texas Longhorns for all the marbles.

No. 1 Florida obviously has the tougher draw for a conference title game, as it gets the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide in what many feel is the “true” national championship match. The road won’t be easy but Florida should triumph. Alabama needs running back and Heisman candidate Mark Ingram to excel if it wants a chance and, if last week’s flop (16 carries, 30 yards) against Auburn is any indication, he may not have what it takes to overcome the Gators’ top-ranked defense. Brandon Spikes may contain Ingram, forcing Alabama to rely on Greg McIlroy. He’s not a great beat to light up the Gators whereas Tim Tebow can overcome the Crimson Tide’s ballhawk defense.

No. 3 Texas gets a much more reasonable path to the BCS championship game, drawing Nebraska for the Big-12 championship. The Cornhuskers are a developing team but they’re young and their starters haven’t experienced a game of this magnitude before. Colt McCoy is a winner – the winningest quarterback in NCAA history – and he’s ready to give his team as shot at the national title.

We’re almost guaranteed a good matchup in the BCS title game and, if you like to make football picks, be prepared to bet on Florida vs Texas.

Five To Watch This Weekend

It’s starting to get busy for online betting players on the college football front, as teams are jockeying for position in their conferences, as well as the BCS. Here are five games to keep an eye on this weekend (point spread in brackets).

No.3. Texas (-9) at No.14 Oklahoma State (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET)

The Longhorns have won 11 straight over the Cowboys, who have been brilliant since losing All-American receiver Dez Bryant to an NCAA suspension. Texas thrashed Missouri on the road, while Oklahoma State did the same at Baylor. The Cowboys’ high-powered offense could use Bryant back for this game, as the Longhorns are second in the nation in defense.

No.5 USC(-3.5) at No.10 Oregon (Saturday, 8:00 PM ET)

These two Pac-10 rivals have split their last 10 meetings, although USC has won four of the last five. The Ducks will be looking to go at USC’s defense, which has looked leaky in the last two weeks, but their improved defense will face a big task trying to contain the Trojans’ offense, led by frosh pivot Matt Barkey.

No.22 South Carolina at Tennessee (-6) (Saturday, 7:45 PM ET)

The Gamecocks usually falter down the stretch, and Tennessee may be where the 2009 edition starts. The Vols, under defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin (coach of Tennessee head man Lane Kiffin), have become one of the top defenses in the country, and if they get a half-decent day from quarterback Jonathan Crompton like they did last week against Alabama, the Vols can play with anyone in the country.

Georgia vs No.1 Florida (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)

“The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” doesn’t hold the same allure as the last two have, but it’s always a good time when Florida and Georgia get together. The Gators’ top-ranked defense may have four of their starters back against the Bulldogs, who have dropped two of their last three.

No.21 West Virginia at South Florida (Friday, 8:00 PM ET)

The Mountaineers are quietly in the Big East hunt, and they don’t do one thing great, but they do everything very well. They’re heading to face South Florida, who was a preseason favourite in the Big East before losing quarterback Matt Grothe to a knee injury The Bulls have lost two in a row, but this is also the team that won at Florida State (if that even means anything anymore).
